Not one character is given a proper setup, and motivations are vague at best with just one scene where our villains are explained. Jack Ketchum's script, apparently based on his own book (I have not read it), is a sprawling mess that feels as though it's too connected to the original work. And he paces the plot like a student film, never picking up speed as the story moves into grimmer territory. Houten even attempts to create atmosphere with his pathetically underwhelming score (from composer Ryan Shore), that actually samples cues from ABC's Lost, but he never seems to know when to use any of the cues (not just the Lost cues) appropriately. He forces his characters into disturbing situations (the film boasts at least two rape sequences as well as two or three mildly off-screen genital mutilations) in hopes to chumming up emotions from his viewers, but he fails to give motive for any of the abhorrent nastiness, leaving audiences more numb than disturbed. Houten fills the screen with grisly images, none of which feel very real. ![]()
